Preventing Infection and Promoting Healing

Proper wound care helps prevent infection and promotes faster healing. Treatment steps may vary depending on burn severity, but often include:

  • Regular dressing changes using medical-grade dressings

  • Clean, moist environments to support new skin growth

  • Monitoring for infection and changes in wound appearance

Scar Management and Long-Term Skin Care

Scars are a natural part of the healing process, but they can impact movement, appearance, and self-esteem. Ongoing treatment can reduce their visibility and help restore flexibility.

Moisturizing and Massage:

  • Keeps skin soft, reduces itching, and prevents cracking

  • Gentle massage helps loosen tight scar tissue

Compression and Coverage:

  • Pressure garments or inserts may reduce raised scars and improve healing

  • Gel sheets or specialty wraps can be used under garments or splints

Sun Protection:

  • Scars are sensitive to sun exposure

  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing help prevent discoloration and skin damage

Emotional and Physical Support

Recovery is more than skin deep. Treatments can also support mental health and mobility:

  • Counseling or support groups to address emotional healing

  • Physical therapy to improve movement and prevent contractures

  • Self-care routines to rebuild confidence and independence

When to See a Burn Care Professional

Even with at-home care, it’s essential to contact a burn care professional if:

  • A wound isn’t healing or gets worse

  • You experience pain, swelling, or signs of infection

  • You have concerns about scarring or movement
