Speech Language Pathology in Burn Care

This meeting will focus on the role of Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) in multidisciplinary burn care and rehabilitation presented by Hadley Regal, MS, CCC-SLP, APS and Dr. Matthew Godleski, a physiatrist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Toronto. This session will provide an overview of how SLPs contribute to the multidisciplinary burn team, including their role in communication, cognition, swallowing, and functional recovery across the continuum of care. Presenters will then review the newly published burn SLP competencies developed to support clinical practice and professional development within burn rehabilitation. The meeting will conclude with an open discussion focused on opportunities for expanding SLP integration within burn centers and the American Burn Association (ABA), encouraging collaboration across all rehabilitation disciplines. Participants will gain a greater understanding of the role of SLPs in burn care, increased awareness of the new competencies, and insight into future directions for multidisciplinary integration and advocacy.
